Although a very elementary form of water closet was invented in 1596, sanitary conditions in most cities in the Middle Ages were deplorable. It was common to discard all household refuse and human excreta on to the streets. Even Paris, Europe’s largest town at the end of the fifteenth and beginning of the sixteenth centuries, was ill-planned, overcrowded and insanitary. These poor conditions prompted Henri IV and Louis XIII to attempt to improve the sanitation of Paris. The Industrial Revolution in Great Britain had a positive impact on the development of more sanitary conditions in London and the industrial towns.

The Industrial Revolution in Great Britain had a positive impact on the development of more sanitary conditions in London and the industrial towns.
