Scholar says that he had the idea for a stage version not long after seeing the ﬁlm in 1996, but ﬁgured that someone would have done it already. He ended up making a name for himself with a version of The Black Rider, a stage show by Tom Waits, William S. Burroughs, and Robert Wilson. Scholar and his father produced the show for the Edmonton Fringe Festival in 1998, took it to the New York Fringe Festival, and toured with the show on and off for the better part of a decade, ending with a six-week sold-out run at the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto in the fall of 2008.
Baker is repeatedly torn between his love for the source book and respect for Turner as a fellow artist on the one hand, and his need to follow his own narrative instincts and the demands of the screen on the other. Because Baker was involved in the ﬁlm’s extensive and drawn-out pre-production, he also manages to chart the draining process of trying to get a ﬁlm made.
