Adam marked Shirin’s book: 17 20. To his dismay, when Shirin passed him back his own exercise book she had written 13 20. Adam felt his face start to feel hot, as his eyes filled with tears. Mrs White came round each table, checking the marks and gathering up the books. She had seen Adam trying to fight back tears. As she looked down to see his score written in his book, she could see why. She glanced over at Josie’s open book and saw that she had 18 . “This is going to be difficult,” she thought to herself.

He let his attention slip for a few seconds. ” he thought. He looked across the table to where Josie was bent over her sheet of paper, elbow shielding her answers from James’ view. Josie didn’t trust James, especially since he copied her spellings last week. Josie was very good at spelling. And hieroglyphs. And riddles. ” And then he thought, “Oh dear, how long have I been thinking about what Josie is doing? ” He looked back at his paper. Suddenly, what had all seemed so clear looked muddled and the letters and pictures didn’t make sense.

At break time, Adam and Josie sat on a bench in the far corner of the school playing fields, sharing their snacks. It was a warm, calm morning, and Adam felt warm and calm too. He and Josie hadn’t said much after Mrs White had announced that they were joint winners. They sat without talking and crunched contentedly on their crisps as they watched a group of boys playing football nearby. Most of the boys were in the top class, a year older than Adam and Josie, but James was with them. Someone kicked the ball over towards the bench.
