Plan Symbols Because electrical drawings must be prepared by electrical draftsmen quickly and within budget, symbols are used to simplify the work. Therefore, anyone who must interpret and work with the drawings must have a solid knowledge of electrical symbols. Most engineers and designers use electrical symbols adopted by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Many of these symbols, however, are frequently modified to suit a specific need for which there is no standard symbol. For this reason, most drawings include a symbol list or legend as part of the drawings or in the written specifications.

Wiring Diagrams Complete schematic wiring diagrams are used infrequently on the average set of electrical working drawings (only for complicated systems such as control circuits), but it is important to Electrical Drawings 45 have a thorough understanding of them when the need to interpret them arises. Components in schematic wiring diagrams are represented by symbols, and every wire is shown either by itself or included in an assembly of several wires that appear as one line on the drawing.

The second concern with circuit boards is handling repairs or replacements. Because of their complexity, many of the components on these boards are nearly impossible to troubleshoot. In addition, manufacturers generally replace the entire board if you return it to them. But once a board has been worked on, the manufacturer has no way of knowing if the board was damaged because of a manufacturing error or because of your work on it.
