The British changed the original “Brossard” to “Brussard” and alternately back to “Brossard” or “Broussard” apparently at the whim of the writer. It survives today in Louisiana as “Broussard,” and is used here after throughout the narrative except when a different spelling is included in historical quotations. Joseph dit Beausoleil Broussard was born in 1702 at Port Royal (Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia). On September 11, 1725, at Annapolis Royal, Broussard married Agnès, the daughter of Michel Thibodeau (Thibodeaux) and Agnès Dugas, one of the most influential Acadian families at that time.
She could not remember the exact spelling but it was enough for Roger and Pierrette to take it from there. They had always known their grand hero. His name was Joseph dit Beausoliel Broussard. In fact, it would have been difficult to forget him partly because he was still being vilified as a bandit and a thug by the Canadian ruling caste, a situation similar to that of the memory of Emiliano Zapata in Mexico.
